OCD and the Myers Briggs

I've taken the Myers Briggs personality assessment at least 10 times. I'm an ISTJ, no question. We're the world's "worker bees." Today it came up in another forum I read, and I went off to read more about ISTJs. I found the following quote:
Under stress, ISTJs may fall into "catastrophe mode," where they see nothing but all of the possibilities of what could go wrong. They will berate themselves for things which they should have done differently, or duties which they failed to perform. They will lose their ability to see things calmly and reasonably, and will depress themselves with their visions of doom.

Hahaha, I think that just described OCD. To be fair, another quote was this:
Their homes are likely to be tastefully furnished and immaculately maintained. They are acutely aware of their senses, and want to be in surroundings which fit their need for structure, order, and beauty.

While that also describes OCD, it does not describe me, a first class slob. I guess that's genetics from my mom coming through.

How about you? Have you done a Myers Briggs assessment? There are a bunch of versions online. Some people love it, others hate to be labeled, but I've found it's usually pretty accurate.

  1. Ann,
I took the test a long time ago through my job. I think I'm an INFJ. I remember that I tested very introverted, and whichever type I tested as was very conscientious.

I think it can be a valuable tool This makes me want to dig through my files and find my test results. Or maybe I'll take the test online.

  2. I know my son Dan took the test in art school. He said at first he and his friends were resistant to it as they did not want to be pigeon-holed, but in actuality they found it very accurate and gave them insight into themselves.

  3. Hi Ann. I'm an ESFJ. I'm pretty extroverted but when the OCD was really bad I actually became less so. Anxiety disorders really do change you. I enjoy these kinds of tests. It always surprises me how accurate a lot of them are. Ha ha, I am a complete slob too. My husband is the one who's always following me around picking up my clothes, etc. Tina, my husband is an INFJ too.

  4. Sunny, you and I are two peas in a pod! I'm an ESFJ with OCD myself. Like you and Ann, I also am not the cleanest person...you should have seen my desk, locker and backpack when I was in school. I've gotten a lot better since I've become an adult, but there is still room for improvement!

Ann, cool blog. I am 29 in a few days and have had OCD since I was about 10. I see a therapist for it, but it is always nice to find people who share your trails. Good luck to you and all others with OCD on here.

  5. I have seen this test before and I actually think that as personality tests go, it's pretty accurate and comprehensive while also concise. I am an INTP, although the T is kind of on the borderline...
